Domzala recruits ERC legend Baran for home run

Tue, 06/18/2019 - 06:00

Aron Domżała will have a secret weapon up his sleeve when he returns to the FIA European Rally Championship on his home event, next week’s PZM 76th Rally Poland.

Domżała, whose last ERC appearance was on auto24 Rally Estonia in 2016, has recruited none other than three-time ERC champion co-driver Jarek Baran to guide him over the fast gravel stages that make up the fourth event of the season from 28-30 June.

And it’s been a promising start to the partnership with Baran co-driving Domżała to second overall on Rally Žemaitija in Lithuania last weekend, Domżała’s first stage rally since July 2018 and Baran’s first event since December 2017, his last with Kajetan Kajetanowicz.

“It’s quite new but it’s really nice,” said Domżała of his new alliance with Baran. “His experience helps me a lot, especially with my pacenotes. After the race [in Lithuania] we are quite well prepared [for Rally Poland], we understand each other, and things are quite easy between us. We got it fast.”

Domżała has made cross-country rallying his focus in recent seasons, winning the T3 section of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies in 2017 and taking part on the Dakar Rally back in January. With a break in his off-road schedule, Domżała is returning to stage rallying in a ŠKODA Fabia R5 run by Toni Gardemeister’s TGS Worldwide concern.

“Cross-country rallying is fun but for sure it is quite different because the route is very long,” the 29-year-old Domżała explained. “I had the possibility to do Rally Poland and I agreed with Jarek we would be very well prepared to fight for a good result. For sure it will be hard to fight with the ERC drivers, but I feel good on gravel and have some experience of Rally Poland.”

Baran, meanwhile, guided compatriot Kajetanowicz to three consecutive European championship titles between 2015-2017. He has 86 ERC starts to his name.

ERC champions shine in Sardinia

Mon, 06/17/2019 - 06:00

A number of FIA European Rally Championship title winners were on form, while the top 13 places were filled by drivers with ERC experience, as Sardinia hosted the latest round of the world championship last weekend.

Of the former ERC champions in action, Esapekka Lappi placed seventh, Jan Kopecký P10, Kajetan Kajetanowicz (pictured) P12, Luca Rossetti P16 and Giandomencio Basso one place behind.

Meanwhile, Team OSCARO-backed ERC Junior Pierre-Louis Loubet scored his second class victory in succession with Kajetanowicz taking the runner-up class spoils. Tom Kristensson, second in ERC3 Junior last season, was third in the Junior world championship category.

Next up for the current crop of ERC title contenders is PZM 76th Rally Poland from 28-30 June.

Gravel “discovery” boosts Poland-bound ERC3 star Bernardi

Sat, 06/15/2019 - 06:00

Florian Bernardi has begun his voyage into the unknown with a successful gravel test ahead of PZM 76th Rally Poland.

A winner in the FIA European Rally Championship’s ERC3 category, Bernardi has limited gravel experience. As a result, he spent a day at the Drive Control centre in Monteils dans le Gard, France, where he was able to build his knowledge of loose-surface driving in his Renault Clio R3T.

“It's almost a total discovery of this surface, I have very little experience on gravel,” said Frenchman Bernardi, who was assisted by Drive Control’s Laurent Clutier and suspension partner R.Tec during the test. “The result of the day is very positive, we did 100 kilometres, which was essential before Poland.

“I immediately felt comfortable in the Clio, we were able to make set-up adjustments to gain experience and find the feeling. With the team around me we will be able to find a good set-up for the rally.”

Bernardi and co-driver Victor Bellotto will contest PZM 76th Rally Poland from 28-30 June in their usual FA Compétition-prepared Clio.

Dream come true time as Svedas gets Polo for ERC

Thu, 06/13/2019 - 06:00

Vytautas Švedas will get an all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 for round four of the FIA European Rally Championship.

The Lithuanian has swapped his ageing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX for a top-of-the-range Polo. And following an outing on this weekend’s Rally Žemaitija in his homeland, Švedas will contest the ERC-counting PZM 76th Rally Poland from 28-30 June.

“We are really happy to step into Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 car,” said Švedas, whose last ERC appearance was in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX manufactured in 2008. “It is a dream come true for us after many years competing in just N4 machinery. We have waited a long time for this.”

Vaidotas Žala, who showed impressive pace on his ERC debut on Rally Liepāja last month, is the top seed for this weekend’s Rally Žemaitija.

Habaj holds a one-point advantage over Briton Chris Ingram in the ERC, while Marczyk (pictured) heads fellow young gun Tomasz Kasperczyk by seven points in the national championship race.

Marczyk and Kasperczyk have taken a win apiece in the Polish championship this year and both have experience of the Rally Poland stages, as does third-placed Marcin Slobodzian, who is in his first season of R5 competition following success in production-specification machinery.

PZM 76th Rally Poland takes place from 28-30 June.

Latvia lesson helps Pole Polonski prepare for home ERC Abarth counter

Mon, 06/10/2019 - 06:00

Dariusz Poloński’s reckons he’s learned the “perfect” lesson ahead of his home round of the Abarth Rally Cup.

The Pole has finished on the podium on the opening two rounds of the FIA European Rally Championship’s exciting, new one-make category, earning €18,000 in prize money in the process.

His last podium was on Rally Liepāja, which also marked his first event on gravel in the Pirelli-equipped Abarth 124 rally and therefore the perfect opportunity to prepare for the upcoming PZM 76th Rally Poland.

“It was a great lesson, we made mistakes, it was difficult but we hope we can learn for the future,” said Poloński.

PZM 76th Rally Poland takes place from 28-30 June.

Althefiri happy with debut ERC podium

Sun, 06/09/2019 - 18:00

Mshari Althefiri made a strong FIA European Rally Championship debut with second place in the ERC2 category on Rally Liepāja.

With his only experience competing outside his native Middle East restricted to events in Cyprus, the Kuwait driver faced a steep learning curve on the fast-paced gravel stages in Latvia.

But he shrugged off his lack of experience to finish second behind winner and local ace Ralfs Sirmacis.

“I’m very happy because it was my first time competing in the European championship,” Althefiri said afterwards.

Althefiri is set for more ERC2 action on PZM 76th Rally Poland from 28-30 June.

ERC’s Johnston happy with “massive, massive steps”

Sun, 06/09/2019 - 06:00

Sean Johnston declared himself “really, really happy” with the “massive, massive steps” in his development on gravel following last month’s Rally Liepāja, the third event of the FIA European Rally Championship season.

American Johnston placed P10 on the high-speed gravel event as he continued his impressive transition from sportscar racing to rallying in a Saintéloc Junior Team Peugeot 208 R2.

“I’m really, really happy with the weekend,” said Johnston. “Saintéloc gave us a great car to work with and I made some massive, massive, steps in my development on gravel.”

Johnston could have finished eighth in class but for a moment on the penultimate stage. “Unfortunately it took us out of the fun fight we were having for those last top 10 positions,” he said. “There was a massive rut and it kicked the car and we spun on the nose 180 degrees. We almost rolled over the front and when we landed we punctured the rear-left. It was a bit too adventurous but we were able to put the spare on and have a good run in the last stage.”

Johnston and co-driver Alex Kuhurani will be back on ERC duty on PZM 76th Rally Poland from 28-30 June.

Time to smile for ERC2 champion Érdi Jr

Sat, 06/08/2019 - 18:00

Tibor Érdi Jr was able to smile on his return to Rally Liepāja, the scene of his debut in an R5 car seven months ago.

Érdi Jr stepped up to the FIA European Rally Championship’s top tier on the high-speed gravel event in October 2018. On his comeback last month, the two-time ERC2 title winner finished P15.

Afterwards he said: “The road position don’t help me a lot on the first day, but on the second day we were much faster and we learned a lot about the car and a smile came out.”

Rally Poland is next up on the ERC schedule from 28-30 June.

ERC rookie Al-Rashed happy with “big development”

Sat, 06/08/2019 - 06:00

Rakan Al-Rashed said he was “quite happy” with his “big development” on his FIA European Rally Championship debut.

The Saudi finished inside the top 20 alongside co-driver and multiple ERC event winner Hugo Magalhães.

“I’m quite happy that we finished,” Al-Rashed said. “We had an excellent rally overall and we learned a lot with the big development on these fast stages.”

While Al-Rashed’s next scheduled ERC appearance is September’s Cyprus Rally, the FIA European Rally Championship heads to Poland for the fourth event of the season from 28-30 June.

M-Sport reveals replacement for ERC title-winning Fiesta

Fri, 06/07/2019 - 18:00

One of the most successful cars in recent FIA European Rally Championship history is being replaced with confirmation of an all-new Ford Fiesta R5 from M-Sport.

Based on the Ford Fiesta ST-Line and powered by an EcoBoost engine, M‑Sport has worked closely with the Ford Motor Company to “ensure the new Fiesta R5 provides a big step forward in terms of pace and performance”, according to the car builder.

M-Sport Managing Director, Malcolm Wilson OBE, said: “We have taken our time to ensure this new model is even better with performance gains in every area. The test programme has been extensive, and we have worked hard to ensure this new car suits every level of driver. We have quite literally travelled the world – testing on a wide range of surfaces, in varying conditions and with a whole host of drivers taking to the wheel. This car is extremely important to us, and its adaptability is vital to its success.”

The original Fiesta R5 is M-Sport’s most successful global rally car with Kajetan Kajetanowicz landing its first major win on the ERC-counting Rally Poland in 2013, the first of 18 victories in the top regional championship.

Kajetanowicz went on to take the prestigious European title for three years running from 2015 before Alexey Lukyanuk drove a Fiesta R5 to the 2018 crown.

More than 250 examples of the first-generation Fiesta R5 have been used in competition. Click here for more information on its replacement, which is the work of a technical team led by M-Sport engineer Bernardo Fernandes.

Details of the new Fiesta R5’s competitive debut have yet to be announced, although it is expected to be eligible for competition use during the second half of the current season.

Von Thurn und Taxis: Polo ERC debut incredible

Fri, 06/07/2019 - 06:00

Albert von Thurn und Taxis described his debut in a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 as “incredible”.

Von Thurn und Taxis switched to the new German machine for the high-speed gravel stages of Rally Liepāja and came through to finish P17 alongside Austrian co-driver Bernhard Ettel.

“I had had so much fun, it was incredible,” said von Thurn und Taxis. “I’m super-happy to be here with a clean car. It’s a fantastic rally for sure.”

Von Thurn und Taxis will get more experience of his Baumschlager Rallye & Racing-run Polo in the ERC when he contests Rally Poland from 28-30 June.

Griebel looks to circuit racing for ERC qualifying fix

Thu, 06/06/2019 - 23:00

Double ERC Junior champion Marijan Griebel has suggested that he might try circuit racing in a bid to up his qualifying pace in the FIA European Rally Championship.

Griebel was P11 on Rally Liepāja’s Qualifying Stage last month. That meant he was driver number 11 to choose his starting position for leg one under ERC rules. As a result, he ran P5 and was one of several drivers to loose out on a less clean and stable road surface.

“I lost the rally on the qualifying already,” said the reigning German champion. “Qualifying was never my strength. In the R2 car it didn't matter, but in R5 on gravel it’s much more important so maybe I have to go in circuit racing to practice a little bit.”

Griebel’s prospects improved for leg two with overnight reseeding putting him P12 on the road after he completed the opening day’s action in P11. And he served notice of what might have been with a brace of top-five stage times to finish seventh overall.

ERC rookie Zala hoping “energy from Lithuania flows over” into Poland

Thu, 06/06/2019 - 12:00

Vaidotas Žala will look to carry over his impressive debut pace in the FIA European Rally Championship when he contests PZM 76th Rally Poland later this month.

Co-driven by Latvian Andris Mālnieks, Lithuanian Žala scored seven top-six stage times on last month’s Rally Liepāja, his first appearance in the ERC. He would have undoubtedly challenged for a top-five overall finish had it not been for a time-consuming puncture on the third stage of the high-speed gravel event.

He has vowed to build on that form when he contests Rally Poland for the first time from 28-30 June.

“Rally Liepāja was quite a tough learning experience,” said Žala. “We were a bit unlucky yesterday but we had to collect as much kilometres as possible and I have hope for Rally Poland where hopefully we can accumulate and improve. I don’t know the rally but it is next door to Lithuania and hopefully the good energy from Lithuania flows over.”

Ingram links up with Lavadinho, will fly ERC flag in Riba de Ave

Wed, 06/05/2019 - 18:00

Top ERC1 Junior Chris Ingram will get back to rallying in front of Portuguese fans after being invited to take part in the Super Especial in Riba de Ave near Porto this weekend (9-10 June).

Ingram, just one point behind pacesetter Łukasz Habaj in the battle to win the 2019 FIA European Rally Championship, is linking up with renowned photographer André Lavadinho to share a Hyundai i20 R5, which Valter Cardoso will co-drive.

Lavadinho is one of the driving forces behind the event, which has attracted more than 50 entries, including five R5 cars, a Porsche GT3 and several Super 1600 models.

He explained how Ingram’s involvement had come to fruition. “I really like his method of work, driving and impact on social media. The organisers asked me for someone like Chris and we agreed. I am sure he will do a good rally with me. And I hope he will be ERC champion this year. He deserves that because he works so much.”

Ingram and Lavadinho will both get three runs in the car and while Ingram is a Riba de Ave rookie, Lavadinho placed sixth overall in a Peugeot 208 R2 in 2018.

The Riba de Ave-based Super Especial begins with an autograph session and co-driver contest on 9 June with the competitive action from 11h30 on 10 June.

Ingram began the 2019 season by winning ERC1 Junior in third overall on the Azores Rallye, which is held on the Portuguese island of São Miguel.

Lukyanuk back in the ERC game, top form to follow

Wed, 06/05/2019 - 06:00

Alexey Lukyanuk’s second place on Rally Liepāja last month got him “back in the game” in the ERC, but as the Russian admitted afterwards, there’s more work to do if he’s to recapture his title winning form of last season.

Lukyanuk arrived in Latvia on the back of non-finishes in the Azores and Gran Canaria and admitted he couldn’t falter for a third event running. Although P2 could yet prove decisive in his bid to win the FIA European Rally Championship for a second season running, it wasn’t the victory he craved.

“Success is a win actually, I’m not happy being second,” the Saintéloc Junior Team driver said. “But we are back in the game after a rather bad start. Of course we would like to be a bit higher on the podium, but we still need to continue hard work on our development package to be there in the future. We need to better understand how we can get the maximum from the new-for-us car and tyres and, of course, ourselves. This remains one of our main goals for this season.”

Although Lukyanuk was quick to highlight the issues that held him back on Rally Liepāja, he was equally rapid in praising first time ERC winner Oliver Solberg. “Of course this does not diminish the value of Oliver Solberg and Aaron Johnston’s victory,” Lukyanuk said. “They showed a brilliant performance and fully deserved the win.”

ERC pair go their separate ways (but not like that!)

Tue, 06/04/2019 - 18:00

Steve Røkland and Marius Fuglerud went their separate ways following their FIA ERC3 Junior Championship podium in Latvia last month. Fortunately for fans of the Norwegian pair, the separation was only temporary.

While Fuglerud switched to co-driving Anders Grøndal on the Aurskog-Høland Rally in their homeland at the weekend, Røkland switched seats altogether, co-driving Bernt Kollevold.

At the finish, both Fuglerud and Røkland had reason to celebrate with Fuglerud winning outright and Røkland taking a class win in fourth overall.
