Home stars take on ERC aces in Zlin

Mon, 08/05/2019 - 18:00

Barum Czech Rally Zlín organisers have issued a packed entry list featuring some of the best drivers in the host country, across Europe and beyond.

Taking place from 16-18 August, the all-asphalt FIA European Rally Championship counter has attracted 57 crews with priority status as part of a list of registrations totalling 137 entries across all events.

Defending ERC champion and current championship leader Alexey Lukyanuk heads the list followed erstwhile pacesetter and former Polish champion Łukasz Habaj.

ERC1 Junior leader Chris Ingram is seeded three, 2013 ERC champion Jan Kopecký is seeded four, while four-time Hungarian champion Norbert Herczig is the sixth seed.

Double ERC Junior champion Marijan Griebel is seeded eighth with 10th seed Nikolay Gryazin taking part on his second prize drive for winning the ERC1 Junior crown in 2018, fresh from winning the world championship’s second tier on Neste Rally Finland yesterday (Sunday).

Zelindo Melegari will aim to preserve his ERC2 title lead, while Dariusz Poloński will look to do likewise in the Abarth Rally Cup. Ken Torn, who heads both the ERC3 and ERC3 Junior classifications is one of 22 ERC Junior drivers in action.

Nabila Tejpar makes her Zlín debut intent on taking the ERC Ladies’ Trophy lead from fellow Briton Catie Munnings.

Lukyanuk to lead ERC field into Zlín stronger than before

Mon, 08/05/2019 - 06:00

Alexey Lukyanuk will top the FIA European Rally Championship standings for the first time this season when the 2019 title battle resumes on Barum Czech Rally Zlín from 16-18 August.

Lukyanuk has enjoyed a testing ERC title defence with two non-finishes and completed Rally di Roma Capitale in Italy last month in frustrated mood after a time penalty dropped him to fourth at the finish.

Following his trip to Italy, the Saintéloc Junior Team driver from Russia, said: “Maybe final result doesn't show it, but all together we did good job, and leaving Italy even stronger.”

Lukyanuk heads Łukasz Habaj by six points after five rounds. They both have a victory apiece with Habaj winning the season-opening Azores Rallye and Lukyanuk taking the laurels on PZM 76th Rally Poland.

ERC graduates fly high

Sun, 08/04/2019 - 23:00

Several FIA European Rally Championship graduates were on top form during Finland’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship, which finished earlier today (Sunday).

While 2014 ERC champion Esapekka Lappi took a season-equalling best result of second, Nikolay Gryazin (pictured), the ERC1 Junior champion from 2018, scored a maiden win in the world championship’s second tier on his first Neste Rally Finland with Jari Huttunen, the 2017 ERC3 Junior runner-up, one place behind.

In the world championship’s Junior class, the 2018 ERC3 Junior runner-up Tom Kristensson triumphed for the second time this season to move back to the top of the title standings.

There were also notable performances from current ERC drivers: Paulo Nobre was sixth in class with Grégoire Munster two places back on a rare start at R5 level. Sean Johnston was sixth in the Junior section.

Broz looks to ERC future

Sat, 08/03/2019 - 06:00

Domink Brož has confirmed his absence from his home round of the FIA European Rally Championship later this month, saving his limited funds to build up to a full-time return in 2019 instead.

An ERC3 Junior regular in recent seasons, Brož has made just two starts in the championship in 2019. However, he went off the road on both the Azores Rallye in March and May’s Rally Liepāja and was restricted to the role of mechanic for category rival Jan Talaš on last month’s Rally di Roma Capitale.

“I rent my car in Czech Republic and I don’t start in Barum to save my money for next season,” said Brož.

Although Brož will be missing from the Barum Czech Rally Zlín entry, a large ERC3 Junior contingent is expected for the all-asphalt event from 16-18 August.

Vogel gets home ERC run

Fri, 08/02/2019 - 15:00

The FIA European Rally Championship will welcome another woman driver when Adrienn Vogel makes her ERC debut on the season-deciding Rally Hungary in November in a Ford Fiesta R2T.

Vogel, who combines her competition career with her job as a TV presenter, took part on her first rally in 2014 and has built her experience mainly driving Kia’s Picanto model, although she has tackled two events in the M-Sport Poland-built Fiesta R2T.

“My first time in rally with this car was in April in Poland,” Vogel explained. “After it I was invited to an official M-Sport factory test where I made a strong impression to the factory engineer. But last time the Perger Mühlstein Rally in Austria was a different challenge for me and for my co-driver Ivett Notheisz. We’ve got a lot of experiences, we’ve learnt a lot and now I know more about the R2 car. Finally we finished at P3 in our category.”

Vogel, who is in her third season in the Kia Platinum Cup circuit racing series, and Notheisz are now getting ready for their step up to the international motorsport stage on Rally Hungary, which takes place in Nyíregyháza from 8-10 November.

“It’s going to be challenging but we can’t wait our debut on our home race supported by our fantastic Hungarian audience. Since the beginning of this year we were exploring ERC opportunities and thanks for the decision of the FIA we have the Rally Hungary this year in the ERC’s calendar so it was clear that it is the perfect chance for us.”

Emma Falcón, Catie Munnings, Cristiana Oprea and Nabila Tejpar are regulars in the ERC Ladies’ Trophy this season.
