Safety first

Date: 2011-08-25 00:13

Organization of European Rally Championship round is a very demanding task, particularly in terms of safety of participants and fans. Rally route is planed together with the police in order to facilitate the traffic around Mikołajki and to enable safe travelling to the spectators’ areas. While mapping out the rally route the organizers have already in mind the safety solutions to be introduced.

This year as usual, the stages will be marked with two colours of the tape – green for spectators’ safe areas and red for forbidden ones. 200km of the tape will be used for it. Every stage is to have spectators’ zones with the car parking. 600 Safety Marshals will oversee the route of the event and behaviour of fans during the rally. The stages will be checked by marshals more than once before the crews would start racing. By then, rally fans standing in forbidden areas will be moved to the spectators’ zones.

Artur Pieńkowski, Chief Safety Officer: There is no place for compromise for rally safety. We keep as the standards the rules created and developed for 2009 Rally Poland, the round of World Rally Championship. There are two ambulances and safety cars available at each stage.  Ambulances  are also to be found on Super SS and in Service Park. Helicopter of Polish Medical Air Rescue stays in readiness as well.

Coordinating of rally staff and the marshals is the task of the Rally Control. All important decisions are taken there, running of the stages and the work of safety marshals is overseen. Having the most important rally officials in one place allows to efficiently supervise 800km of rally route and to react fast in case of emergency.

Rally Poland management puts safety in the first place – marshals who are responsible for safety of the rally are well trained, and the security standards are retained on the highest level. Organizers have at their disposal medical resources as well as multiple monitoring systems, which oversee the running of the rally. Rally fans can also help to take care of the driver’s and their own safety – mostly by observing the regulations and using common sense.
