It was back in 2005 when Rally Poland moved from Lower Silesia to Masuria District’s main town, Mikolajki. Both Polish and foreign competitors and spectators are happy that Poland’s major rally event is held on gravel stages in country’s most picturesque region.
Beauty of Masuria’s landscape was also admired by the organizers of worldwide contest called “New 7 Wonders of Nature”, which was launched by Swiss foundation “New7Wonders” founded by a famous traveler Bernard Weber. Originally there were over 400 candidates among 224 countries including Masuria and Puszcza Bialowieska who fought for the trophy.
Initial results were known at 21st July 2009: 71 candidates including Masuria qualified to semi-finals. Then, jury of experts conducted by Federico Mayor, former CEO of UNESCO chose 28 finalists. Masurian Lakes were qualified to the final bearing the first place in “Post-glacial era of landscapes and formations”.
Undoubtedly Masuria’s success belongs also to rally fans! Now we are heading the next challenge – supporting competitors during 68th Rally Poland as well as supporting Masuria in “New 7 Wonders of Nature” contest.
